It may seem to many parents that their kids ought to take studying more seriously-especially when it comes to important tests such as the SAT’s.

Yet it may be the medium rather than the message that fails to inspire serious study time.

Kids may just need something they can tune in to and a new approach to studying may help them hum their way to better scores. A new study guide teaches SAT vocabulary in a medium kids can certainly relate to: rock music.

“Rock the SAT” (McGraw-Hill, $16.95) serves up teen-friendly, vocabulary-boosting tunes that teens will be able to digest in the car, on an iPod, while exercising, riding their bikes or even doing chores.

The CD features 13 songs-with each tune holding 20 or so popular SAT vocabulary words and their meanings-within original rock lyrics. The accompanying workbook guides students through each word and definition, using irreverent humor kids will like.

It’s a welcome change from more traditional methods of memorization, like index cards or mind-numbing laundry lists of words/definitions. Experts say that because of the way these lists are organized, it makes it hard for teens to focus or relate to them.

An advantage of the “Rock the SAT” tunes is that the information is spoon-fed through catchy pop tunes and melodies, making it easy to absorb without much effort or time commitment. People have an easier time, experts say, remembering lyrics than text.

With this musical tool, students can hum their way to better scores on the SAT’s.

Should we believe the experts? (Part III)

Why do we use experts? To predict the future. Consider a patient who is asking a physician about the future effects of a certain drug, or the investor who is asking a stock analyst about the future prices of a certain stock, or the manager who is asking a human resource manager about the future performance of a certain candidate, or the brand manager who is asking a market researcher about the future sales of a certain new product. Should we believe these experts? History tells us that accurate predictions of the future are rare. Many examples exist where the brightest and most qualified individuals failed to see the future. This series of articles presents examples from the arts (see part I), business (see part II), and science (see part III).

Should we believe the experts in science?
In science, the predictions made by Sir Rayleigh and Lord Kelvin on heavier-than-air flying provide two famous examples of misguided intuition.

John William Strutt Lord Rayleigh (1842-1919) was a leading British physicist. In 1876 he was elected as President of the London Mathematical Society. In 1879, he was appointed as the second Cavendish professor of experimental physics at Cambridge (the first was the famed James Clerk Maxwell). In 1905 Sir Rayleigh was elected President of the Royal Society. In 1908, he became chancellor of Cambridge University. Sir Rayleigh is perhaps most known for the discovery of the inert gas argon in 1895, which earned him the 1904 Nobel Prize in physics. Sir Rayleigh was also interested in flight. In 1883 he published The soaring of birds, and in 1889, The sailing flight of the albatross.

In 1896, a year after making his seminal discovery, Sir Rayleigh commented, I have not the smallest molecule of faith in aerial navigation other than ballooning. (Martin 1977, p 12)

Another great physicist who expressed an opinion about heavier-than-air flying is William Thomson, better known as Lord Kelvin (1824-1907). Thomson was an infant prodigy in mathematics. In 1841, at the age of 11, he entered the University of Glasgow. Thomson published his first paper in mathematics at the age of 16. In 1846, at the age of 22, Thompson became a Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University. In 1847, he first defined the absolute temperature scale, which was subsequently named after him. In 1851, Thompson published ideas which lead to the introduction of the second law of thermodynamics. In 1856, Thompson coined the term kinetic energy. Thompson also showed an interest in practical problems. In 1854, he participated in the Cyrus Fields efforts to lay a transatlantic telephone line. He improved the design of the cables, and traveled on the ships laying the cables to supervise the process. In 1858, Thompson invented and patented the galvanometer as a long distance telegraph receiver meant to detect faint signals. He also invented an improved a gyro-compass, new sounding equipment, and a tide prediction machine with a chart-recording. Lord Kelvin published more than 600 scientific papers and was awarded 70 patents. In 1890, Thompson was elected as the president of the Royal Society. In 1866, Thompson was knighted. In 1892, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Kelvin of Largs, which title he chose from the Kelvin River, near Glasgow. When he died in 1907, he was buried next to Isaac Newton in Westminster Abbey.

In 1895, Lord Kelvin proclaimed that Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible.

On December 17, 1903, less than a decade after Sir Rayleigh and Lord Kelvin made their predictions about the impossibility of heavier-than-air flying, the Wright brothers made their first manned airplane flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, proving that both great scientists were dead wrong in their predictions of the future.

Another example of misguided intuition is Sir Woolleys prediction on the future of travel in space. Sir Richard van der Riet Woolley (1906-86) was the Eleventh Astronomer Royal. He studied at both Cape Town University and Cambridge (where he worked with Sir Arthur Eddington, the physicist who first confirmed Einsteins relativity theory). In 1929, Woolley moved to California and began work at Mount Wilson Observatory. In 1931, he returned to Cambridge. Woolley joined the Royal Greenwich Observatory in 1933 as Chief Assistant. In 1939, he became the Director of the Commonwealth Solar Observatory at Mount Stromlo in Canberra, Australia. In 1955, Sir Woolley was appointed the Astronomer Royal, a position he continued to hold until his retirement in 1970.

In 1956, a year after being appointed Astronomer Royal, Sir Woolley announced to the press that space travel is utter bilge. (Martin 1977, p. 9) A year later, in 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, the first man-made object in space, and five years later, in 1961, the first space traveler, the cosmonaut Yuri Gagrin in Vostok 1.

Tell me a Story After you craft your sizzling speech title, you then need to tell stories to your audience so that you grab and hold their attention. As an engaging speaker, you will want to relate your story to your content. Your own personal stories will make your content very vivid and interesting.

Screenwriter, Robert McKee says, Stories are the creative conversion of life itself into a more powerful, clearer, more meaningful experience. They are the currency of human contact. Most of us delineate our thoughts visually, so use very descriptive words to help the audience see what they hear from you.

Use coaching stories that relate to the needs and interests of your audience. For example, if you are trying to enroll small business clients, tell exciting stories about how your satisfied clients benefited from your coaching sessions.

Its okay to be funny. If you think funny thoughts, you will live and relive your story as you tell your story. It is best to be in the now. Your words need to create an image in the audiences mind so that they will remember your story.

When telling your stories, be dramatic, maintain eye contact, use theatrical gestures, vary your tone and above all Be a Model of Excellence!

Ben Wallace NBA Career

Born on September 10, 1974, Ben Wallace attended college at Virginia Union, where he studied criminal justice, and currently plays for the NBAs Detroit Pistons. He stands 6′9″ tall and weighs 240 lbs and is the 10th of 11 children. In his free time away from the court, Ben Wallace enjoys swimming, hunting, fishing and video games. During the off-season, Ben and his wife Chanda reside in Virginia. During his collegiate years, Wallace led his team to the Division II Final Four and an impressive 28-3 record.

The 1996-1997 season marked the rookie year for Ben Wallace, during which he saw only limited action as a reserve player for the Bullets. Having appeared in 34 competitions during the season, he averaged 1.1 point per game. During the 1997-1998 season, Wallace experienced his first NBA career start, during which he grabbed 12 rebounds, against the Indiana Pacers on January 27, 1998. The following seasons gave Ben Wallace additional court time, which allowed him to continue bettering his game. The 2002-2003 season found Ben Wallace missing a handful of games due to injuries, but he still managed to play and start in 73 regular season games.

The 2003-2004 season marked the second consecutive season for which Ben Wallace earned All-NBA Second Team honors and the third consecutive season that he was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team. Our stomach is one of the parts of the body that receives the harshest treatment and the least appreciation. Think about it. When is the last time you were really thankful that your stomach was working properly? Perhaps it takes seeing a friend or family member who has a rough stomach for us to really be grateful for our stomach health. But it shouldn’t. We should be consistently treating our stomach with care so that it can do it’s job well without causing us pain.

Being good to your stomach can be simple. Maybe you are already making wise choices for your stomach or perhaps you will have to make some severe lifestyle changes in order to really be good to your stomach. Whatever it requires, you should commit to being good to your stomach from this point forward.

What does it mean to be good to your stomach? Basically, to be good to your stomach means watching the things you put into it and the things you do. Surely everyone has experienced the pain of eating a meal that is too spicy or too greasy or too full of acid. Our stomachs do so much in the process of breaking down our food choices. Many times our stomachs are able to cover up some of our eating “sins,” but other times they let us know that we have made a poor choice. I’m convinced that we owe it to our stomachs (not to mention to the rest of our bodies) to make healthy eating choices that are easy on our bodies and good for our health.

Take some time to evaluate the things you are putting into your stomach each day. Are you being kind or harsh? Do you notice any patterns that could perhaps be harmful to your digestive system? If so, consider changing them. You only have one stomach, and therefore it requires your upmost attention and care. Different stomachs have different levels of tolerance for spices, acids, and foods. You may not be able to eat everything your neighbor or even your spouse can eat. It is important that you learn, if you haven’t already, what is good for you and stick to it.

The great thing about learning to eat based on the reaction of your stomach is that you will end up making good choices not only for your stomach but also for the rest of your body. The chances are high that what is good for your stomach will also benefit your body and your overall health. So be intentional about what you eat and drink and don’t hesitate to pass up things that aren’t good for you or your stomach.

Ice skating has a long history. In fact the origins of ice skating date back to the early ninth century. The purpose then was far more practical, however, than recreational. The earliest ice skates are believed to have been found in London and made of horse bone. It is believed that these skates served utilitarian purposes such as movement from place to place in order to search or scavenge for food rather than the largely recreational purpose that most ice skates have in modern society.

Ice skating over the centuries has become more of a recreational activity and provides long hours of entertainment to both skaters and spectators alike. From figure skating to ice hockey all around the world there is a fondness for this particular activity that transcends time and speaks volumes about both the complexity of this activity and the simplicity of it.

Ice skating is a sport that is both loved and hated by its practitioners. For some the entire sport is ice skating, for others the actual act of skating on ice is simply one aspect of a very complex and multifaceted activity. And others are simply content to skate. In and of itself ice skating provides a significant challenge for those just learning and becomes second nature to those who have been doing it for long periods of time.

The difficulty of ice skating is much like that of roller skating. Once you learn, you never really forget. You may have a few unsteady moments in the beginning after a long absence but all in all it comes rushing back once you get out there and try again. School uniform manufacturers have until recently only supplied a range of averaged school uniform for nursery, primary and secondary schools. What size is an average child? How many times have you been into a high street store looking for boys and/or girls school uniform and the sizing is not equivalent to the age. In my experience this can vary dramatically. An average 5 year old could fit into anything from a 3 year old to an 8 year old depending on where you shop. The majority of high street outlets cover themselves by adopting dual age ticketing 2/3, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13 and then adult sizes ranging from XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL. As a leading school uniform supplier we use a traditional approach by using tailored sizes. For example for sweatshirts, sweatshirt cardigans, knitted jumpers and cardigans, polo shirts and fleeces we primarily use chest measurements in inches and then we use the age guide 1. The same applies to boys and girls blazers as the fitting is more critical the school blazers are sizes in 1 increments to find the equivalent age all you have to do is subtract 22 for example a 33 blazer in age is approximately a 11 year old 2. Trousers for boys and girls have waist measurements and overall inside/outside leg measurements. This is particularly useful for short / long leg length 3. Shirts and Blouses are measured either by collar size for boys or chest size for girls. Boys school shirts are in half inch increments 4 and girls school blouses are in divisions of 2 5.

* Search the internet, look for great deals. There are various types of hotels that offer great discounts on the web for online customers. Be sure to check these out.

* Plan your trip during the off season months. These are the times when big discounts are give..

* Call the hotel of your choice. Ask them about offers and discounts that they can give. List all promotions.

* Certain hotels can give discounts to credit card holders of certain card establishments. Ask for the manager and ask him about it. The manager is the best person to ask, since if you can make negotiations, he has the authority to make negotiations with you.

* At off peak seasons, you could definitely ask for special rates. Then if they don’t budge after you have offered a discount, ask some extras, like breakfast.

* When negotiating, it is very important to write down all agreed discussions. Write too, the names of the persons that you have been talking to, the time as well as the day and date. Ask for a number that you can call before checking in to the hotel for confirmation.

* Upon arrival to the hotel, look around and ask for negotiations once more. For instance if you feel that the hotel is not fully booked, ask for a room with a better view than the one you are in, if you don’t agree with what you see.

How To Cook Different Rices; From Indian To Italian Or Thai

There are many different sorts of rice. among them, the parboiled one that I do not recommend, regardless of the brand. Some people may like it but for me this is something other than rice. The taste is awful and it seems to never be cooked. To have good rice, use Indian, Thai or Asian rice; or any other rice that is not parboiled. Italian rice is very good as well. According to the rice you buy, you will need to use a specific cooking method; for example, Asian rice is not good for making risotto, Italian rice is not good for serving with Chinese cooking.

Boiled rice: The simplest way to cook rice.

Note: This is a very simple way to cook rice but not the best because the rice, boiled in a large quantity of water, is “washed” and most of the taste is lost in the water. Look below to see my recommended methods for cooking rice. The methods to cook the rice are different according to the sort of rice you are using.

1- Bring a big quantity of water to the boil. (8 to 10 times the volume of rice), together with 1 tbsp of salt for each 2 pints of water used.

2- Add the rice and bring back to the boil, on a high heat, stirring frequently.

3- Reduce the heat to a low to medium heat, to keep boiling until the rice is cooked. Stir occasionally to make sure the rice is not sticking to the pot.

4- When cooked, (about 15 minutes, maybe less according to the specific rice you are using), strain and serve immediately, plain or with butter or olive oil.

5- If you are not serving the rice immediately, cool the rice in cold water, strain and store until you are ready to serve it.

(The rice can be very easily reheated in a microwave oven. You can also use it to prepare fried rice)

Pilaff: An alternative way to cook rice (use Basmati rice for instance for this recipe)

This method is called riz Pilaff (or pilaw) in French cuisine.

1- Take an ovenproof dish, put on a medium heat with one tbsp of butter for 2 cups of rice.

2- Add some chopped onion and sweat* in butter.

3- Add the rice; stir it in to the butter with the onion, for one or two minutes, until the rice becomes translucent.

4- Add 11/2 the volume of water, together with some salt, pepper, and a whole garlic clove if you like, (this is optional).

5- Bring to the boil, cover with aluminium foil, put in the oven at 200°C (400° F), and cook for between 14 and 17 minutes, until done. It should be ready when all the water has been absorbed.

*When sweating the onions you can add a choice of whole spices (not ground). Sweat together with the onions, then add the rice and cook together. You will have to remove the spices when eating or before you serve the rice. This takes a little time, but the rice cooked in this way is really very delicious.

Risotto: To use Italian risotto rice it is better to cook it the risotto way.

Here is the basic way to do it.

1- Sweat chopped onions in some butter.

2- Add the rice, (“arborio”, “vialone”, “carnaroli”…; (about 3 ounces per person).

3- Stir until the rice becomes translucent.

4- Add dry white wine to the level of the rice. Cook until almost all the wine is evaporated.

5- According to the recipe you are preparing, (if your risotto will be made plain, with sea food, meat, vegetables etc.) add fish stock, vegetable or chicken broth; (for 12 oz of rice add about 1 pint of the stock, you will add more later).

6- Bring to the boil on a medium heat, stirring frequently. Add salt and pepper.

7- Keep cooking the rice, adding more liquid when necessary. (The quantity of liquid necessary to use in risotto is difficult to say as different rice brands will absorb more or less liquid.)

8- Immediately after the rice has absorbed the previous amount of liquid, add more liquid, and repeatedly add a little each time, allowing the rice to absorb little by little the liquid.

9- Repeat the process until the rice is cooked, stirring frequently.

10- When done, the risotto should be cooked but a little “al dente”. It should be creamy as well.

11- To finish add grated parmesan and serve immediately.

12- To give more taste, add chopped garlic, cream during the cooking process.

Almost anything can be added in risotto, depending on personal choice; vegetables cut in cubes, sea food, chicken, meat cut in small pieces, cooked before or not, depending if it can be cooked in the risotto itself.

The basic Asian way of cooking rice:

To prepare the rice this way, you can use a rice cooker; this is a wonderful device. It will cook alone and keep the rice warm for hours.

If you do not have a rice cooker:

1- Put one volume of rice (Thai, Basmati etc.) in a pot.

2- Add 11/2 the volume of water, and stir.

3- Put on a medium to high heat.

4- Bring to the boil. Cover with a lid and boil on a low to medium heat until cooked.

5- Serve immediately.

(Make sure the water does not evaporate too much during the cooking. Do not stir the rice during the cooking).

Brown rice

Brown rice can be cooked in the same way as: “Boiled Rice: The simplest way to cook any rice”; except that the rice will need to be cooked for about 1 hour to be ready.

Drain and store like plain rice in the recipe above.

Neti For A Smooth Respiration

To enjoy smooth respiration, you need to take care that both the nostrils should be clear and the passage within them should be completely open for air to move. But with many people, it is usually only one of the nostrils that is open. Hence it is important for you to clean the nasal passage. Yoga gives a kriya called Neti which is useful for clearing the nostrils.

In Neti, a thick thread of about one foot made by interlacing three or four thin threads and softened with butter or oil is passed through one of the nostrils and is brought out through the mouth. Hold both the ends of the thread together and rub the nasal passage by pulling both the ends of the thread, alternating to and fro. When you finish cleaning one nostril, take out the thread from the mouth. Wash the thread properly and insert it in the other nostril. Repeat the process. You can replace the thread with a rubber catheter and derive the same purpose.

You can also perform a milder version of Neti by pouring lukewarm water with a dash of table salt through a cup with a spout into your nostril. You stoop slightly forward and tilt your head to a side to pour water. Do not permit the water to go down the throat but it should come out through the other nostril.

Drinking water through the nose can be another form of Neti. The water should not be either too cold or too warm. Take this water in a bowl, dip your nostrils slightly into the bowl and then tilt it. Suck the water gently and let it go down the nostrils. This will irritate the inside of the nasal passage initially, since the upper side of the nasal passage is very delicate and water will irritate it. But regular practice will teach you to pass the water through the lower nostril, so there is no irritation. This method is very useful in warm climates as it cleans the nasal passage and has a soothing and refreshing effect on the nasal canal, brain and eyes.

As per tradition, water is kept in a copper vessel overnight and is drunk through the nose early in the morning. Once you get the experience, you can easily empty an entire glass of water within a minute or two. You can then enjoy the yogic breathing after cleaning both the nostrils. But people with a deviated nasal septum or any breathing disorder should always take medical advice before doing yogic breathing.

A strongly-themed hotel usually narrows its market, but if the design and execution are properly planned and managed, the hotel can fill a niche and enjoy high occupancy rates.
